Frequently Asked Questions

Can film really be "PRESERVED" onto DVD?

Preserved, no--Transferred, yes! Film has a much finer grain, or resolution than video. Video cameras are not as adept as film in capturing finer detail, color, and variations in brightness. Subtle tones are missed and contrast can be over-emphasized. But a quality transfer can come very close making it easy to view. It also becomes a backup in case the film becomes unviewable.

Some companies claim that they can create a DVD that equals the quality of your film--is this possible?

NO. But a quality video transfer can come very close. The convenience of DVD makes it very worthwhile to do a "transfer" and makes watching these fun for everyone. Plus, it is a backup in case your film deteriorates. Remember--your film is the original.

How should I store movie film?

Keep and store your film in a cool, dust free environment free from excessive moisture. Check on it occasionally for a vinegar-like smell. If you discover it, have your film transferred right away--or risk loosing it in a matter of months!

What if I just want the film transferred so that I can do my own editing?

We can provide you with the digitized video on DVDs in "AVI" format. You can import these files into most video editing software packages where you can apply your creative skills.

"Corrected Speed" - Why should I be concerned about it?

When Super 8 film is transferred to DVD, the projector pulse rate (54) must be speeded up by 11% to match the rate of video fields (59.94 fps) to eliminate annoying pulsating changes in brightness. Regular 8mm is speeded up even more. This makes fast movements look unnatural. Even worse, with sound film, the playback will simply be too fast with a raise in pitch. To overcome this, after a transfer, we reduce the speed back to the original rate to restore the original cadence and sound pitch. It takes more time but you will be happier with the results. A different process is used on 16mm but the outcome is the same.
